DIY summer and updates

I've been neglecting the blog of late, so here's a long awaited update on some of the things I've been up to.

Firstly, if you nip to this link you can watch me and some fellow Sheffield creative types working on the DIY summer project at Site Gallery (namely The Old Sweet Shop, TeaBag Designs, Theo Simpson, Betty Thread, Sheffield Publicity Department & the installation of Screenadelica's gig poster exhibition).

After creating the logo and event info above, I've been working in the gallery on and off for two weeks painting on the main gallery wall and windows, mapping the various workshops and goings on throughout the project. After a week of working alongside a great selection of Zines from Rotherham Zine Library, I also had a chance to try out a bit of stencil screen printing with the boys of Crow & Dunnage which was surprisingly successful, and housed a pop up shop in the gallery.

I was also fortunate enough on my walk home from the gallery to stumble upon a bit of collaborative street art in progress by Ghost Patrol, Kid Acne, Ema, Pleghm and Barber Filth.

Amongst this, I've also been finishing up a project painting onto 10 1930s lampposts (that I'm sure will show up here soon), and creating a few illustrations for Sheffield's S1 Magazine. & hopefully lots more to come soon. Phew...

I've had a number of little 'goals' set for myself this year. Some of these have been met, some not so much.

One that I didn't think of, was to have someone get my work tattooed onto themselves permanently. So I've been

equally surprised and excited about a few people contacting me about making this happen.

I couldn't be happier to say that the most recent of which has been by 2/3 of the band Lemuria, who got matching

wagtail tattoos after seeing my work on a flyer for their show in Manchester. & yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing them in and on the flesh.

Firstly, the piece I donated to Artists for the Red Cross has now been sold. From what I hear they made their overall target, which is great news! Here's a little peek of my work at the exhibition in the Winter Gardens.

I've also been spending some of my time off from deli work scouring the charity shops for plates and mugs and

anything I could possibly draw onto. Here's some mugs, that are soon to be put into the shop.

In January 2010, I got my first and only tattoo (to date) done by the fantastic Liam Sparkes, based on my own design

of an eastern white pine cone I'd picked up during a trip in New York.

Not long ago a chap called Adam in Seattle commissioned me to draw him his very own pine cone after seeing mine.

I feel so satisfied that someone is walking around with my design on them, and that they felt my work worthy enough

to put on themselves permanently. It turned out great & I'm hoping there will be more to come in the future!

New piece 'Dwelling', donated to Artists for the Red Cross.

Artists for the Red Cross is a charity art exhibition and auction promoting the work of the Red Cross and raising funds for their services both locally and overseas.

The event will be taking place at the Millennium Galleries, Sheffield on 2-4 June 2011. On the third day the work will be auctioned via blind auction and all profits given directly to the Red Cross.

Small Cinema

April 21st sees the grand opening of A Small Cinema at Rotherham's Old Market Gallery, Corporation Street. The small cinema will hold

3 days of events screening local films, archive footage, documentaries and more.

I've been commissioned by Open Minds Theatre Co. who own the gallery space, to do a few bits of window painting advertising the project.

Last week I was also at the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield doing a bit of an impromptu live drawing demonstration that coincided with their current exhibition by Katerina Seda, alongside Jane Faram and Thomas Ball

Yesterday I had myself a little stall in Sheffield at this years Spring Fling by Craft Candy. Being new to craft fairs I opted for a smaller
start up stall. Lucky enough I was sharing a stall with the lovely maker behind Cinnamon Girl Prints, who makes some great leaf/bird
designs screen printed onto reclaimed fabrics.

After making some new bits of stock I think it's about time I re-opened my Etsy shop, which will probably happen in the first 2 weeks of April.

Tomorrow I will be painting windows in Rotherham for a small cinema event, and wednesday evening I'll be in the Millennium Galleries yet again, doing a bit of live art alongside Tom Ball and Jane Faram for an event that coincides with their recent exhibition.

it seems i'm not very good at typing up what i've been upto recently, but here we go!

the first thing i'd like to mention is the new website of photographer Galaxie Andrews, who asked me to draw up some little icons. here's what i came up with, but be sure to check out her website to see them in use!

as mentioned before, i took part last minute in the Inkygoodness exhibition earlier this month. the show looked great and i was so happy to be amongst so many talented people. here's a couple of new pieces i made especially for the show. apparently one of my pieces sold to a lady from Singapore, if you can see this lady from Singapore, thankyou very much!

& last but very much not least, a couple of days after being back from London and the 'Play' opening, i helped out the rest of the Stars in Stripes crew to paint on the walls of a waiting room at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. check out the post here to see more pictures of the finished piece

what a long long time it's been since i've last contributed a few words to the internet. i don't quite know where to start with what i've been working on, but rest assured i have been

may saw the release of Boat to Row's EP 'Crossroads', a limited run of 100 tapes with handmade cases designed by yours truly, along with badges, a tote design & some other bits and pieces. released by dlpr records. (ps. today is Michael King's birthday. happy birthday Michael King!)

most recently, this weekend was Tramlines festival in Sheffield, and i was given the opportunity through the newly formed live art collective Stars in Stripes to do some work in both the Washington & at Soyo. i was a little wary of the whole thing at first, and i have to say i had very little in the way of a plan beforehand but i came out with some good stuff in the end, and it made a nice change to be making things with other people close by. fun weekend all round! & really nice to meet/spend some time around other creative folk

(hopefully i can sneak a better picture of this at some point!)

The time has come again to introduce a few more recent additions to No Culture Icons. The first introduction comes in the form of the super talented Ben Cain -

Ben Cain is Preston born but is currently working from London. His work is driven by stories of adventure, road movies, wildlife films, aerial photographs and maps. Be sure to check out his website for more work

The second is Jack Hudson, an illustrator living and working in Bristol, UK. Jack's narrative-driven work utilises imaginary worlds and characters and is inspired by humour, David Attenborough nature programmes (of course!), 1960's sci-fi posters & hot coffee

And last but definitely not least is Anthony Zinonos. Born in South Africa and grown up in Cyprus, Anthony now lives and works as artist/illustrator in Norwich of the UK. He is a member of the WAFA collective and in his own words is 'never far from a stick of UHU, scissors, coloured pencils and a mess of papers'. (well thank god for that)

i've been very quiet lately. i started a part job at the riverside in sheffield, and most of my time has been taken up doing bits of things for them, including my first try drawing way bigger than usual, on chalk boards. it's a lot more tiring than i/you would think, but i got a lot of satisfaction from the scale of it and it's making me think about working much bigger & in very different ways in the future!

i've also been spending some time sorting out badges and layout for the Boat to Row EP, which now has a release date of 16th May! looking forward to getting it all made up

aside from these two things i've just bought myself some basic screen printing equipment and i can't wait to get started on some shirts and totes

Richard Sanderson - born in 1986 in Norwich. Studied at Bristol UWE, but is currently living in North London where he works from his studio. He has a fondness for most things mid-20th century (architectural and still) and strives to move static images on the page through his use of mark

Mariana Sissia - Born in 1980, lives and works in Buenos Aires. Mariana obtained a degree in painting from UNR (University of Rosario), and is currently preparing for her final thesis. In her work titled 'Self-defence system" she creates a conceptual system, materialised by a group of illustrations that explore ideas of imitation, adaptation, the hidden and entrenchment.

before i went to study at university i used to work with our local milkman, going door to door collecting money (you have to start somewhere, right?). every friday we would visit a care home for the elderly. one old woman in particular i got on really well with, her name was irene fenn, we used to talk about how we both liked art and she would ask me a lot about my life - i remember all of the watercolour paintings she'd painted, framed and hung up on her walls. one day she asked if she could have a photograph of me to paint, and i obliged. just before i moved away to study, she gave me the painting with a hand written note attatched. at the time it didn't really strike a chord with me, but i thought it was 'nice' of her. earlier today i was rummaging around in our garage through some of my old things and i came across the painting and the note

i don't know if it's just hindsight, or the fact that i know she's not around anymore, but it makes me feel really content to have these things in my hands now. compared to everyone else i would visit, she seemed the most interested in life, and the most at ease with her situation. right now, 3 and a half years later, i can honestly say that i do love this thing we call 'art', and i'm still trying my best to be happy. it makes me sad that i never got to visit her again, but i'm glad i can put these things here for people to see

my life seems to have turned upside down at the moment. for a while i was a bit lost, some things have happened, but from today i'm going to do my best to find my way again; even if that means finding the way on my own

today has been the first day i've done any drawing for a while. i've also been working on a few badge ideas, and mostly, drinking lots of tea and hardly eating. working on it though

here's some things from today. the first is a reminder for myself, the second because i miss him

in case you can't tell, i bought myself a badge maker. so far i've been messing around with fabrics and letters, as well as scanning in these great illustrations from a plants and animal book made in 1974. there'll be a lot more to come, hopefully soon to be packaged up and ready for sale on etsy when i get everything together

so i'm on a bit of a roll at the moment. another drawing from yesterday

so today i drew for nearly all of the day, drawing in a way i haven't really drawn before. being out of uni is odd, and i'm kind of trying out drawing for fun all over again.

i seem to have got a triple cross-road situation going on. do i stick with fine art work and aim for galleries, or do i go more illustrative? do i do art at all or do i just grin and bear any job at all? do i stay at home or do i move out? too many decision for an indecisive person to make! for now though i enjoyed the drawing today, and hopefully it will become more regular now. even if it is just drawing floating heads of people i like - why not?

yesterday i registered for a selling account on etsy so hopefully within the next month i will have some things on there and all ready to go. obviously i will let the world know about it when it comes around! but keep an eye out for updates

some new buys over the last few days; a wooden S, new doily, some sort of measuring cups, numbered 1 2 and 3, by hand book (trying to inspire and bankrupt myself in one go), and my favourite, natural history museum tote

instead of buying i should probably start trying to make things again. tomorrow i'm going to strip off some of the wallpaper in our study, hopefully once the study is decorated i'll have a nice place to do some work

today has been mainly sorting, putting things into piles and boxes and finding things i didn't know i had. i found so many old letters, ticket stubs and photographs. within the mess were some of my record of achievement reports from when i was 4/5 up till i was 10/11. it's strange to think that i was small once, learning things and not knowing about things like the future.

some of my faves:

'sarah does not seem to have a special girl friend but blends in within the class' - age 6
'she doesn't always work well in a group and must work at her social skills to avoid friction with other children' 'she likes to play football with the boys' - age 7
'sarah can climb to the top of a rope now after much effort' - age 8
'she can be moody at times when things don't go her way - but she has a nice smile' - age 9
'sarah is a good singer, dancer and a talented artist' - age 10
'she is a very good all rounder who gives her best in all she does' - age 11

it's a weird time of my life to be looking at these things, straight after finishing education for what might be forever. what they have told me though is that it's the small things that build up to make you who you are and take you places, and that i can't expect to climb up the rope first time
